What you will learn and contribute to

Upcoming systems in the field of optical communications are expected to address different needs spreading over various market segments. Their development associated with a refined modeling of the networks requires a system design that draws on information and communication theory. For reliable and high-speed communications, an important and remarkable development has been the advent of channel coding techniques based on large-scale probabilistic models. Modern coding and signal processing permit to operate close to Shannon’s theoretical limits while keeping low computational complexity. This assumes that the overall system has been matched to a valid physical and technological model.

The internship deals with applying modern digital processing techniques to practical cases found in optical communications. Fiber nonlinearities or other optical impairments will be studied for deriving fundamental limits of next-generation systems. Specific communication schemes will be developed.

As an intern at Bell Labs “optics” you will get familiar with state-of-the-art research on coding theory and take part to the development of next-gen optical fiber coding systems. You will acquire an operational understanding of optical technologies and communication theory.

A successful candidate is expected to have interest in one or more of the following topics:

• Information and coding theory
• Algorithms and signal processing
• Non-linear optics
• Statistical & MachineLearning

Your skills and experience 

• Candidates should be completing a MSc program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or any related field - or be part of a PhD program.
• Candidates should have a background in communication theory with the ability to program in Matlab.
• Candidates should be able to develop creative solutions and innovative ideas with the aims of translating abstract concepts into practical designs.
• Strong written and spoken communications skills as well as the ability to work in a multicultural environment are required.
